Pointe Carleton lighthouse on Ile d’Anticosti.

Pierre Lambert & Claude Parent/Québec Original

Anticosti Island

Like something coughed up out of the mouth of the St Lawrence, the 8,000-sq km (3,000-sq mile) Ile d’Anticosti ( [map] may seem a little remote. Surrounded by steep cliffs and treacherous reefs, Anticosti was known as “the graveyard of the gulf.” About 400 shipwrecks scatter the coast, some of them quite recent. These days, populated by 300 people, Anticosti is an ecotourist’s haven. It is home to the fourth-largest population of bald eagles in North America.

The island is now divided between three outfitters (SEPAQ Anticosti, Safari Anticosti, and Pourvoirie du Lac Geneviève), with the exception of the village of Port-Menier. Reservations with an outfitter are definitely recommended for hunting and fishing (mainly sea trout, salmon, and speckled trout), and permits are required for fishing and hunting anywhere in Québec. Access is convenient: daily flights leave from Havre-Saint-Pierre, and a ferry boat, the Relais Nordik, takes passengers from Rimouski or Sept-Iles to Port-Menier.
